Spring Waterfalls Are Roaring — Here’s Where to See Them in WNC
Something shifts in the mountains around mid-March.
The ridgelines soften. Redbuds light up along forest roads. Spring rain and snowmelt push every creek and cascade to full volume, turning WNC’s waterfalls into the thundering spectacles they were made to be. Wildflowers — trillium, painted azaleas, bloodroot, oconee bells — are already spreading across the forest floor from the foothills to the high country.
If you’ve been waiting for the right weekend to lace up your boots, this is it. Here’s what we’re exploring this week.
⛰️ FEATURED ADVENTURE
Catawba Falls — The Spring Waterfall You Need to See
Just east of Asheville near Old Fort, Catawba Falls delivers one of WNC’s most rewarding waterfall experiences — and right now, it’s at peak flow. The trail follows the Catawba River through a shaded forest valley to a spectacular 205-foot cascading waterfall. Spring rainfall makes it especially powerful: the mist keeps things cool, and the moss on the rock face turns an almost impossible shade of green.
This one works for everyone — families, first-timers, dog owners, and seasoned waterfall chasers alike. The trailhead is off Exit 73 on I-40 at Catawba River Road. Fair warning: the lot fills fast on weekends, so arrive early.

🏘️ LOCAL DISCOVERY
Black Mountain — The Quiet Town With Big Character
Just 15 minutes east of Asheville, Black Mountain moves at a slower pace — and that’s exactly the point. Walk Cherry Street for local coffee at Dripolator, craft beer at Pisgah Brewing, and a visit to the eclectic shops that line this walkable downtown. The town sits right at the base of the Black Mountains, home to Mount Mitchell (the highest peak east of the Mississippi), making it an ideal base camp for a weekend of hiking and exploring.

⚡ QUICK ADVENTURE IDEAS
Black Mountain — The Quiet Town With Big Character
🥾 Easy Hike of the Week: Graveyard Fields on the Blue Ridge Parkway — flat terrain, two waterfalls, and wildflower displays just steps from your car.
🌊 Waterfall Pick: Rainbow Falls in Gorges State Park — a 150-foot cascade framed by spring wildflowers. Gorges earns “temperate rainforest” status for a reason.
🚗 Scenic Drive: The Blue Ridge Parkway near Craggy Gardens (check closures first — some sections remain closed for Helene repairs). Open sections offer unforgettable early-spring views.
🌅 Sunrise Viewpoint: Strawberry Gap Trail near Fairview — panoramic views down Hickory Nut Gorge with the Craggy and Black Mountains as your backdrop.
🌼 Wildflower Spotlight: Grandfather Mountain is already blooming with serviceberry, bloodroot, and oconee bells. The display only gets better through May.
⚠️ Trail Alert: Sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway between Linville Gorge and Mount Mitchell remain closed for Hurricane Helene repairs. Additional closures are expected mid-March near mileposts 280–305 for a rehabilitation project. Always check the NPS road status map before your drive.
